The TV4 Group to Launch 24-hour News Channel, Create a News Company with Bonnier Broadcasting
This fall the Swedish TV4 Group will start up Nyhetskanalen - a news channel with complete news coverage. Nyhetskanalen will be Sweden's sole 24-hour news-only channel. The TV4 Group and Bonnier Broadcasting will also be creating a news company that will take over production of all news and current affairs programming within the TV4 Group, both nationally and locally.
This fall, the 24-hour news channel Nyhetskanalen will premier in Sweden. Nyhetskanalen will be the only channel to offer Swedish viewers a complete news service with a global, national and local focus on news, sports, weather, the economy and entertainment, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Nyhetskanalen also opens a new window to an attractive news-watching market for advertisers.
"This secures our position as the most important and biggest TV news source in Sweden," says Göran Ellung, news and current affairs director of programs, for the TV4 Group. "The combination of TV4 News' strength and the presence countrywide of TV4 Sverige?s 25 local TV stations gives us a breadth of coverage no one can beat. Nyhetskanalen gives us the possibility of further strengthening our coverage, while at the same time deepening our analysis of what?s happening in Sweden and globally in a whole new way."
The TV4 Group and Bonnier Broadcasting have also decided to create a common news organization for production of news and current affairs for the TV4 Group and other external partners. The production of programming for the TV4 news and current affairs division and the 25 local stations within TV4 Sverige will be a part of the new company, as well as the new Nyhetskanalen.
"With more efficient production of news and current affairs programming within the group, we can make necessary savings," says Jan Scherman, CEO for the TV4 Group. "But we also create new possibilities to offer news material from a credible and independent media company to other companies. It ensures a continued high quality of news production while giving us the possibility to grow."
"By coordinating TV4's news department with local TV and turning it into a separate company, we provide a clearer business focus that leads to efficiencies and new business," says Torsten Larsson, CEO for Bonnier Broadcasting.
Göran Ellung will be the CEO for the new news company, which will start operations in 2012. In the fall, Ellung will also lead a study of business models, production, rationalization and organization for the news company.
Jan Scherman will be the executive chairman of the board for the new company, which will be owned by Bonnier Broadcasting and TV4 Sverige AB.
